| The Greenfield Stadium Broke Ground |

The ground-breaking ceremony of the Greenfield Stadium was held in Trelawny, Jamaica on November 11, 2005. The Stadium, which will host the Opening Ceremony and several warm-up matches of the Cricket World Cup in 2007, will be built by Complant, a Chinese Company using the US$30 Million concessional loan provided by the Chinese Government to the Jamaican Government. During the ceremony, Jamaican Prime Minister the Most Hon. P. J. Patterson, and Mr. Xiao Jianguo, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica joined their hands together in spreading the first two shovels of soil for the cricket pitch of the stadium, which marked the formal commencement of the construction of the huge project. Mr. Ehsan Mani, President of ICC, several Cabinet Ministers, Mr. Hao Yongjiang, councillor for economic and commercial affairs of the Embassy and Mr. Mao Furong, President of Complant from the Chinese side attended the ceremony. President Mao Furong also signed the construction agreement with Dr. Wayne Reid, Chairman of the Jamaica Cricket 2007, the Local Organising Committee.
Mr. Xiao Jianguo said in his speech delivered at the ceremony that the Chinese Government attached great importance to the friendly cooperative relations between Prime Minister Patterson spoke highly of the sound relationship between the two countries and expressed his appreciation for
Several hundred local representatives also attended the ceremony. They expressed their thanks to the Chinese Government for providing fund to this project which will boost the local economy. This ceremony was fully covered by the local major media and press. |
