The Greenfield Stadium Broke Ground

The ground-breaking ceremony of the Greenfield Stadium was held in Trelawny, Jamaica on November 11, 2005. The Stadium, which will host the Opening Ceremony and several warm-up matches of the Cricket World Cup in 2007, will be built by Complant, a Chinese Company using the US$30 Million concessional loan provided by the Chinese Government to the Jamaican Government.

During the ceremony, Jamaican Prime Minister the Most Hon. P. J. Patterson, and Mr. Xiao Jianguo, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica joined their hands together in spreading the first two shovels of soil for the cricket pitch of the stadium, which marked the formal commencement of the construction of the huge project.

Mr. Ehsan Mani, President of ICC, several Cabinet Ministers, Mr. Hao Yongjiang, councillor for economic and commercial affairs of the Embassy and Mr. Mao Furong, President of Complant from the Chinese side attended the ceremony. President Mao Furong also signed the construction agreement with Dr. Wayne Reid, Chairman of the Jamaica Cricket 2007, the Local Organising Committee.

Mr. Xiao Jianguo said in his speech delivered at the ceremony that the Chinese Government attached great importance to the friendly cooperative relations between China and Jamaica. "At present, Sino-Jamaican relations are enjoying a good momentum of progress", with frequent high-level visits and continuously strengthened bilateral economic and trade cooperation. The cooperation on the Greenfield Stadium "symbolizes the sound friendship and close economic cooperation between our two countries." Mr. Xiao closed his speech by assuring the Jamaican side that, with the high attention paid by the Chinese Government and Complant to the project, as well as the good cooperation between the Chinese and Jamaican sides, the stadium will be completed on time with high quality, and ready to welcome the Cricket World Cup 2007.

 

Prime Minister Patterson spoke highly of the sound relationship between the two countries and expressed his appreciation for China's support and aid to Jamaica's development. He said, the groundbreaking of the Greenfield Stadium heralded a new era for the citizens of the region to enjoy the world-class sport facility and opened up tremendous opportunities for economic growth and social interaction for the people. He believed there's great potential in the cooperation on sports between Jamaica and China.

Several hundred local representatives also attended the ceremony. They expressed their thanks to the Chinese Government for providing fund to this project which will boost the local economy. This ceremony was fully covered by the local major media and press.
