|The Embassy of the People's Republic of China Encourages Chinese Nationals in Jamaica to Safeguard Their Legitimate Rights and Interests in Accordance with the Law|
Kingston, Jamaica, August 22, 2017: Since the first Chinese immigrated to Jamaica over 160 years ago, operating a grocery store has been one of the conventional occupations of Chinese. Chinese Jamaicans have made outstanding contributions in promoting Jamaica’s economic and social development and have become an integral part of the “Out of many, one people” as enshrined in Jamaica’s national motto. Chinese Jamaicans are Jamaicans. Any remark or action putting Chinese Jamaicans against the other ethnic groups of Jamaica will imperil the safety and living environment of Chinese Jamaicans and undermine Jamaica’s ethnic solidarity and social harmony, which is consequently inconducive to the development and prosperity of the whole country.
The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Jamaica is determined to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests and the life and property safety of Chinese nationals in Jamaica, and requires all Chinese nationals in Jamaica to strictly observe laws and regulations of Jamaica and operate their businesses in accordance with the law. The Chinese Embassy supports the law enforcement authorities of Jamaica to punish illegal and criminal acts, provided that relevant law enforcement actions are fair and just, non-discriminatory and not targeted at the Chinese community.
Quite recently, Chinese nationals in Jamaica have been falling victims to frequent violent crimes such as robbery and larceny, which bring threats and damages to their life and property safety. While encouraging Chinese nationals in Jamaica to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests in accordance with the law and strengthen safety measures, we expect Jamaican law enforcement authorities to more effectively fight criminals and protect the life and property safety of Chinese nationals in Jamaica, and maintain a favourable investment environment in Jamaica.
