On July 1, Ambassador Tian Qi contributed an signature article titled A Hundred-Year Journey, the Original Aspiration Remains the Same--The Story of the Communist Party of China to Jamaica Observer, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC. The full text is as follows:

This year marks the the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China(CPC). Through unremitting efforts over the past 100 years, the CPC has made remarkable achievements, leading the Chinese people in achieving a historic transformation from standing up to growing rich, and has made historic contributions to the country, the people, the nation, and the world.

Explore a development path that suits China's national conditions and point out the right direction for the rejuvenation of Chinese nation

From the outbreak of the Opium War in 1840, China was gradually reduced to a semi-colonial, semi-feudal society, bullied and enslaved by the Western powers and suffering the notorious behaviors of national betrayal and humiliation by feudal rulers. For more than 100 years, almost every imperialist country in the world invaded China, forcing it to pay indemnities, cede territory, open treaty ports and grant privileges to foreigners.

In the process of the Chinese people's anti-imperialist and anti-feudal revolution, along with the integration of Marxism-Leninism with the Chinese worker's movement, the CPC was born on July 1, 1921.

After the founding of the CPC, it rallied and led the Chinese people to defeat Japanese imperialist aggressors, overthrow the Kuomintang reactionary rule, complete the new democratic revolution, and eventually establish the People's Republic of China after 28 years of bloody struggle. The founding of the People's Republic of China completely ended the history of the old China as a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, which marks a milestone that China has achieved national independence and liberation and the Chinese people have since stood up as the masters of their destiny. Since the CPC took power as the governing party of China, the Chinese nation has ushered in a new epoch of development.

In the initial stage after the founding of the People's Republic of China, facing with extremely difficult and complicated situations both at home and abroad like its sluggish national economy and the political isolation, economic blockade and military threats from western countries led by the United States, the CPC made active efforts to find a path of socialism suited to its own conditions. With the completion of socialist transformation, it established the basic socialist systems and scored remarkable achievements in the socialist drive. Starting from scratch, it managed to create an independent and rather complete industrial system and national economic system, and achieve the zero breakthrough in cutting-edge technology such as nuclear technology, artificial satellites and rocket launchers.

The Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee held in December 1978 made a historic decision to shift the focus of the work of the Party and the country to seeking economic development through the reform and opening-up initiative, which has greatly liberated and developed the social productive forces. China has taken immense strides to catch up with the trend of the times, completing in a few decades the industrialisation that the developed countries had undertaken for hundreds of years, establishing the most complete modern industrial system in the world and becoming the world's second largest economy and largest exporter, joining the ranks of middle-income countries.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress held in November 2012, the CPC Central Committee, with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, has led the Party and people of all ethnic groups in advancing the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics on all fronts. With historic achievements and transformation, socialism with Chinese characteristics enters a new era. As the second largest economy, the largest industrial country, the largest trader in goods, and the largest holder of foreign exchange reserves in the world, China contributes approximately 30% to the growth of the world economy. China has scored landmark achievements in strategic high-tech fields such as high-temperature superconductivity, nanomaterials, bioscience, manned spaceflight, lunar exploration, quantum communication, deep-sea exploration, supercomputing, Beidou navigation, manufacturing of big planes, high-speed rail, etc. The modernisation of infrastructure has leapt to the forefront of the world, with the total mileage of high-speed rail exceeding 2/3 of the world's total mileage, the mileage of expressways ranking first in the world, and the completion of the world's largest 5G network, etc.

The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China drew a grand blueprint for realising the Chinese Dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, proposing that China will see the basic realisation of socialist modernization by 2035 and build itself into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious and beautiful, at the centenary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in the mid 21st century.

Always put the people first and fundamentally change the destiny of the Chinese people

General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that, "Our Party comes from the people, has its roots in the people and serves the people. We must champion the Party's principle of serving the people wholeheartedly." The CPC has made a great contribution to the Chinese people by enabling them to become the masters of their country, their society and their own future, and enabling all the people to move towards the goal of common prosperity.

From the middle of the 19th century, hundreds of millions of Chinese people were plunged into poverty or even extreme poverty due to the foreign aggression and the decadence of the imperial dynasty. Since the founding of People's Republic of China, and especially since the reform and opening-up, Chinese people's living standards have gradually improved. By 2019, the GDP per capita exceeded US$10,000. Through nearly 40 years of poverty alleviation work, especially the hard work since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, more than 770 million of China's rural population living below the current poverty line have been raised from poverty, accounting for more than 70 percent of the global total over the same period according to the World Bank's international poverty standard. Against the backdrop of severe global poverty and a widening gap between the rich and the poor in some countries, China has won the battle against extreme poverty and achieved the poverty alleviation goal set on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, 10 years ahead of schedule. This has significantly reduced the world's poor population and made a significant contribution towards realizing a better and more prosperous world.

The democratic rights of the Chinese people are fully guaranteed. The establishment of the system of people's congress which is the fundamental political system and the promulgation of the Constitution of the People's Republic of China meant that the Chinese people's exercise of the right to be masters of the state had a reliable institutional guarantee and constitutional basis. Great progress has also been made in China's practice of building a socialist democratic political system. The system of the people's congress, the system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC, the system of regional autonomy for ethnic minorities, and the system of grassroots democracy in urban and rural areas - all important components of China's democratic system - have been continuously improved and developed. Chinese people enjoy the rights to democratic election, democratic consultation, democratic decision-making, democratic management and democratic supervision guaranteed by the Constitution. China guarantees the people's freedom of speech, association and etc. within the norms of the Constitution and laws, and safeguards a wide range of human rights, with the right to survival and development at their core, so as to the Chinese people have truly become the masters of their own country.

Whether a political party or government is good or bad depends first and foremost on whether it can safeguard and develop the fundamental interests of the general public. In 2020, 39.144 million members of CPC fought on the front lines against the COVID-19 pandemic. They did their utmost to prevent the people from being infected and save patients, erecting an iron-clad great wall to stop the virus. China is one of the best performing countries in pandemic response. The vast majority of Chinese people deeply feel that living in China is the safest and happiest. The latest public opinion survey results from international authoritative organizations show that the Chinese people have 95% trust in their government, topping the list of all countries.

Strive for human progress and make China's contribution to solving the problems of all mankind

As CPC General Secretary and Chinese President Xi Jinping put it, the CPC strives for both the wellbeing of the Chinese people and the progress of humanity. As the biggest political party in the world, the CPC must honor its status with commensurate great deeds. The CPC does everything for the happiness of the Chinese people, the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the peace and development of all mankind. It always contributes to world peace and tranquility. No matter how developed China will be under the CPC leadership, it will never seek hegemony or engage in expansionism. The CPC contributes to the common development of the world. It is ready to serve not only the Chinese people but also people of other countries. The CPC contributes to the exchanges and mutual learning between world civilizations. It has always treated the creations of other people with an open mind, been ready to carry out dialogue, exchanges and cooperation with the people and political parties of all countries, and supported people-to-people exchanges and friendship.

The CPC has been actively engaging and developing relations with political parties in other countries and promoting the healthy and stable development of relations between China and other countries, thus making its due contribution to world peace, economic development and human progress. At present, the CPC has established various forms of contacts, exchanges and cooperative relations with more than 600 political parties and organizations in more than 160 countries and regions in the world, including Jamaica. Since the 18th National Congress, the CPC has proposed to promote the building of a global community of shared future for mankind, promote the building of a new type of international relations, and promote the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI). Since its launch in the autumn of 2013, the BRI has received warm response from more and more countries and improved the wellbeing of the people of participating countries and regions.

Despite the grave and complex challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, China managed to bring its economic growth back to a pre-pandemic rate, making itself the only major economy in the world that pocketed positive economic growth. Its full-year GDP exceeded 100 trillion yuan ($15.45 trillion) for the first time. It brings positive spillover effects to the global economy and plays an important role in the stabilization and recovery of the global economy. In this unprecedented battle against the pandemic, China has, while receiving support and help from many countries, mounted a massive global humanitarian operation. Notwithstanding the limited production capacity and enormous demand at home, China has honored its commitment by providing free vaccines to more than 80 developing countries in urgent need and exporting vaccines to 43 countries, provided 2 billion US dollars in assistance for the COVID-19 response and economic and social recovery in developing countries hit by the pandemic, sent medical supplies to more than 150 countries and 13 international organizations, providing more than 280 billion masks, 3.4 billion protective suits and 4 billion testing kits globally.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relation between China and Jamaica, the two countries and parties in two countries have established a profound traditional friendship. Especially in recent years, bilateral relations have developed healthily and smoothly, the enthusiasm for high-level exchanges has continued to rise, exchanges between political parties have become increasingly close, and political mutual trust has continued to increase. After the outbreak of COVID-19 epidemic in China, the Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party conveyed their condolences in the first place, saying that they would stand closely with the CPC and the Chinese people in these difficult times and believed that the epidemic would soon be effectively controlled under the strong leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19 in Jamaica, the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPC acted swiftly to donate a batch of urgently needed supplies to the two parties, and shared the experience and initiatives of the CPC in leading the fight against the epidemic, providing strong support and assistance to Jamaica. The mutual solidarity and support between the political parties of the two countries during the epidemic vividly illustrated that "a friend in need is a friend indeed".

The CPC, the Chinese government and the Chinese people are willing to continue to strengthen exchanges with political parties in Jamaica, promote the continuous development of China-Jamaica relations, enhance the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, and jointly promote a global community with a shared future and a world of lasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness, tolerance, cleanliness, and beauty.
