On December 16, 2006, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Amari Akira, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea Chung Sye Kyun, and U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman, who visited China for the First Five-Country Energy Ministers' Meeting, in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen said that energy saving is a strategic issue faced by China's economic development. We are now being committed to building an energy-saving society. We are striving to save energy and reduce energy consumption by introducing favorable policies, developing new technologies and increasing input. On the basis of making rational use of coal, oil and gas, we will strive to develop renewable energies including wind, solar power and biomass. The Chinese government is willing to strengthen cooperation with all countries in the fields of energy development and exploitation, especially in terms of saving energy, improving energy efficiency, developing alternative energies, and energy environmental protection so as to contribute to the stability, security and sustainable development of the international energy market.

The foreign parties indicated that the five countries have shared interest in the energy sector and face common challenges. They are willing to continue to adopt effective measures to promote the development of new energies and the application of energy-efficient technologies so as to consolidate the global energy security.

Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission Ma Kai was present at the meeting.
