Wang Yi met with DPRK Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho

On August 3, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a bilateral meeting with DPRK Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' meeting and related meetings.

Wang Yi said that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping and Chairman Kim Jong Un and with their efforts, the traditional friendly and cooperative relations between China and the DPRK are showing new vitality. On the occasion of the 65th Anniversary of the ending of the Korean War, Chairman Kim Jong Un laid a wreath at the Martyrs Cemetery of the Chinese People's Volunteers in Hoechang County and delivered a very touching speech, from which we feel once again how much Chairman Kim Jong Un and the DPRK party and government value their traditional friendship with China. We stand ready to work with our DPRK comrades to implement all the important consensus reached by our two top leaders, consistently enhance strategic communication, steadily move forward practical cooperation, and make the utmost efforts for the continuous sound development of China-DPRK relations.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK. Chairman Kim Jong Un is leading his party and people in making strategic adjustments to their national development path, focusing their strength on developing economy. China welcomes and supports that and will continue to help the DPRK achieve economic development and improve its people's living standards. Recently, the DPRK has taken a series of measures in advancing the Korean Peninsula denuclearization and improving its ties with the US. China commends these efforts. We hope that the DPRK could stick to this right direction, and meanwhile we hope that the US could take the concerns of the DPRK side seriously and work towards the same direction with the DPRK. All in all, we will remain in communication and cooperation with all parties including the DPRK to jointly advance the Korean Peninsula denuclearization and strive to realize enduring peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula at an early date.

Ri Yong Ho said that under the leadership of Chairman Kim Jong Un and President Xi Jinping, DPRK-China traditional friendship has been blossoming like spring flowers. The DPRK and China will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties next year. The DPRK stands ready to work with China to write a new chapter of bilateral relations on the occasion of the 70th anniversary. China plays an important role in maintaining stability of the Korean Peninsula and advancing denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The DPRK side will maintain strategic communication with the Chinese comrades over this to ensure stability and development of the Korean Peninsula and the region.
