Wang Yi Meets with President Halimah Yacob of Singapore

On August 2, 2018, President Halimah Yacob of Singapore met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the presidential residence.

Halimah Yacob asked Wang Yi to convey her warm greetings to Chinese leaders, and expressed that Singapore and China maintain sound relations, with very frequent bilateral high-level exchanges, fruitful results from cooperation in various fields, and smooth progress of cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, including the third-party cooperation. Both sides should actively discuss new thoughts and new measures, and further expand as well as deepen bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation. It is hoped that both sides will speed up the negotiations on upgrading the bilateral free trade agreement. Over the past three years, Singapore, as the country coordinator for relations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China, has promoted ASEAN-China relations for lots of positive progress. The Singaporean side stands ready to continue playing a positive role in facilitating the development of ASEAN-China relations.

Wang Yi conveyed the warm greetings from Chinese leaders to Halimah Yacob, and expressed that China and Singapore are good friends and good partners. This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up, as well as the 40th anniversary of Mr. Deng Xiaoping's visit to Singapore. Singapore has made contributions to China's reform and opening up in different phases. Mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries has brought great interests to the two peoples. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Singaporean side, make joint efforts, maintain and intensify high-level exchanges, and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields. The joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative is a significant opportunity for advancing the China-Singapore all-round cooperative partnership progressing with the times. The Chinese side appreciates the Singaporean side for being one of the first countries to actively support and respond to the Belt and Road Initiative. It is believed that the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative by China and Singapore will not only open up new prospects for bilateral relations, but also provide new impetus for Singapore to maintain national development vitality. The Chinese side thanks the Singaporean side's active efforts and contributions to the promotion of China-ASEAN relations during its tenure as the country coordinator for China-ASEAN relations, and hopes that the Singaporean side will continue to play a constructive role in propelling the development of China-ASEAN relations.
